ExamDiff Pro

Did you ever want to take two files, put them side by side and see what differences are between the two? Or did you ever want to take two folders, put them side by side and see how they differ? If you answered “Yes” to both these questions, then you need to get a piece of software to help you out. One such piece of software is the PrestoSoft-developed ExamDiff Pro (ExamDiff is presumably short for “examine the difference”).

This piece of software, which by the way weighs in at little under 6MB, works with all versions of the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system, including the quite old Windows XP and the latest iteration, Windows 7. And it will work free of charge for a period of 30 days.

What can the software do? In a double-pane interface the ExamDiff Pro application allows you to compare two files or two folders – this includes text, binary files, and folders. The comparisons feature color-coded line numbers indicating whether each line is added, deleted, or changed. To edit files you can use the built-in editor, or you can use your editor of choice.

As mentioned above, you can use ExamDiff Pro free of charge during the 30-day trial period. This should be more than enough time to see if you like the application or not. If you like it, then you can purchase a license. If you like it but cannot afford a license, you can download and use the freeware version, mainly ExamDiff (no Pro in the title). This version does not cost you a thing from a financial point of view – it’s free, so what could it cost you. But it costs you from a functionality point of view. The freeware version comes with no binary files support, no folder comparison, differences between files are not highlighted, no customizable suyntax highlighting, no Unicode support, no customizable keyboard shortcuts, and more.

No matter what files you want to compare, ExamDiff Pro loads them, puts them side by side and highlights the differences. Useful functionality for any web developer, from the novice that is now getting to grips with HTML to the advanced developer that wants an efficient tool.
